Help Needed
There are some housekeeping items that I would love some help with as the school year draws to a close. Volunteer time is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12:50-1:50. If you can spare any time I would GREATLY appreciate it! :)
Editing Writing
Students have been using "kid friendly" rubrics to edit their writing for punctuation. Today they are partnering up to help a friend edit for punctuation. We will be using various kid rubrics to help students self assess their writing for the remainder of the year!

Math Update
We finished our Extending Numbers and Operations unit this week. This was definitely the most challenging unit thus far as it pushed the kids to use everything we've learned already this year and apply it when adding and subtracting larger numbers. Students also used their knowledge from our place value unit. Story problems continue getting more challenging as students need to understand what the question is asking them to do and identify what information is already given. Students are needing to learn to move from one type of story problem to another with ease and pick an appropriate strategy. We've especially been working on the missing addend concept. After this unit, students should be able to:
1. Use a variety of strategies to add and subtract within 100:
-Using Concrete Models or Drawings
-Using Place Value (add tens to tens and ones to ones)
-Demonstrating an understanding of the Relationship Between Addition and Subtraction\
2. Provide verbal or written explanation of the reasoning used (words).
3.Add a two-digit and a one-digit number within 100.
4.Add a two-digit number and a multiple of ten (in the range of 10-90).
5.Subtract a multiple of ten (in the range of 10-90) from a multiple of ten (in the range of 10-90).
6.Compose and decompose tens when necessary.
7.Mentally add 10 to a given 2-digit number.
8.Mentally subtract 10 from a given 2-digit number.
Next week we begin our new math unit on GEOMETRY. This unit is always a lot of fun. Our essential questions for the unit are: How do we describe shapes and objects?
How can geometric figures be constructed?
We really emphasize the understanding of how shapes can be composed and decomposed as well as describing attributes and comparing shapes.

Reader's Theater
Students performed their reader's theater this week - what fun! They worked so hard applying what they learned during our character study unit and really became their character! They read with fluency and expression. They designed a setting which was appropriate for their story. They did an amazing job all around! If you would like a copy of the performances, send in a flash drive and I would be happy to share them with you!! (They are too large to e-mail)
Grant's Farm
Our trip to Grant's Farm is Wednesday, May 4th. Please return forms and money by April 27. Thanks!
Class Reward
Students have earned a class reward for our goal: quiet transitions. It took us some time to reach this goal and we will continue working on transitions for our next goal. Students voted on a pajama day with stuffed animals to celebrate. Pajama day will be next Wednesday, April 20. If students want to bring a stuffed animal please make sure it is a small/medium sized one. Let me know if you have any questions!

Reading Goal
This month we changed our reading goal from number of books to minutes read. Our class goal for April is 21,440 minutes!!!! We are at this point only at 1,966 minutes! Perhaps some of the children have still been recording number of books read on their homework. Please transition to MINUTES read. Remember, the grade-level expectation is 20 minutes per evening. If each child completes this each evening, we will make our class goal and our grade-level goal. Thanks for your help with this!

Readers Theater
Students are doing so well with their scripts for our readers theater! They are really getting into character! They are creating settings to display during the performance.
Research Project
In writing students are working on a research project. They are gathering facts on their topic and preparing to write a google presentation to teach about their topic. Each partnership has chosen an animal to research. This week we are working on gathering facts. The children will then need to organize their facts. They will be typing their presentations! I will share links with you when complete so you can view their awesome work!
