Reading Update

Readers are working hard as we learn and incorporate these skills during our non-fiction unit:

-Preview a book to learn about the topic.
-Notice similarities and differences between fiction and nonfiction texts.
-Explain facts or details using text features and distinguish between what facts were provided by -pictures and what facts were conveyed via words
-Use text features to locate specific information in text
-Use text features to restate the main topic
-Describe the connection between two pieces of information in a text
-Use pictures to find details and information to support the text.
-Ask and answer questions to clarify meaning
-Distinguish between fiction and nonfiction
-Identify examples of sensory details
-Visualize the text to infer what happened before and after.
-Synthesize a text by putting all the parts of the text together.
-Recall key details learned in a book.
-Take turns building ideas talking about a book with a partner.
-Apply decoding strategies and notice patterns in nonfiction text.
-Notice patterns in the beginning, middle, and end of words.
-Break apart words and put words back together.
-Check that words look right and make sense.
-Use word meaning to decode new words.
-Determine word meaning from the context

Data

We have started our data unit in math. Learning outcomes for this (short) unit:

Students will be able to...

-organize and interpret data with up to three categories
-represent data with up to three categories
-ask and answer questions about the total number of data points.
-ask and answer questions about how many in a category.
-ask and answer questions about how many more or less are in one category than in another.

writing

We continue to work on our beginning, middle, and end unit. We have studied narratives and fiction books to see how real authors craft an interesting story. We have learned that good stories usually contain: setting, character(s), problem, and solution.

This week we are really focusing on adding more details. The format we will learn involves the students practicing writing at least 3 supporting details throughout the middle of their story. While that's a great starting point, many students are ready to add more than 3 details in the middle. Students will learn how they can use details to create a clear picture in their reader's minds.

The Importance of Sleep

Wanted to share some great info that came home last week! Personally I am working on getting more sleep right now. It's important to remember how much our kiddos need it.
