We are working on topic 3 of Unit 1 this week and will begin topic 4 next week. Students continue to work on developing and applying a variety of addition and subtraction problems, show their work, and explain their math thinking.
Strategies emphasized during topics 3:
1. Number line
2. Doubles Facts (ex. 3+3)
3. Near Doubles (ex. 3+4 or 3+5)
4. Make 10 to add numbers (ex. 9+7 could be modified to 10+6)
Students are learning that different strategies may be helpful based on what the different problems are they are trying to solve. A good mathematician will use a strategy that best fits the mathematical situation.
Strategies emphasized during topic 4: (subtraction)
1. Count back using a number line
2. Make 10 to subtract
3. Fact families (see addition and subtraction relationships)
