Adventures in Non-Fiction

The students continue to study Non-Fiction in both Writing and Reading. In Writing, students are working to create their own "teaching" books! Students are learning how to use text features such as table of contents and headings to make their books even better. Students have collaborated with partners to determine what information may be missing from their teaching books. They have tried to write with their audience in mind and be thorough in their writing. The kids are writing about a wide variety of topics and are having a lot of fun with them!

These are writing skills we are focusing on:
Teach about a topic by organizing information and using a teaching voice
Plan before writing by telling information across fingers, sketching, then writing
Imagine and answer questions readers may ask about the topic
Teach with both pictures and words
Bravely spell expert words by stretching them out
Peer coach and revise writing
Self-assess and set writing goals
Edit for spelling, capitals, and punctuation
Write a table of contents
Plan individual chapters, telling across and down fingers
Write with details such as comparisons
Include different kinds of writing such as how-tos, persuasive ideas, and stories within a nonfiction book
Include an introduction
Include a conclusion

______________________

In reading students are reading non-fiction books and online resources on many different topics. Students are learning to pick out important information to share. Students are learning to navigate using various text features. This week we are learning what to do when we come to a new word. We are learning how important these words can be in understanding the text. Students are learning to use context clues to learn MORE.

Science

We are in our newest Science unit - Balance and Motion! We learn a lot about these concepts in fun, interactive, and hands-on ways! The essential questions for this unit are:

-Why do things move?

-What are different ways to change the motion of an object?

-What is balance?

During this unit, students explore stable (balanced) and unstable systems, using counterweights to change the center of mass of the systems. They explore two types of motion--spinning and rolling--first through trial and error, and later through systematic explorations. Students begin to develop a sense of variables, which they control to produce desired outcomes.

Some key vocabulary terms:
axle
balance
counterweight
motion
rotate
slope
sphere
spin
stability
wheel

Math - Data Unit

We started our new math unit last week! It is all about DATA! This is one of my favorite units. The students are having fun so far. The essential question for this unit is: How do we use data? After completing this unit students will be able to:

- organize and interpret data with up to three categories - represent data with up to three categories - ask and answer questions about the total number of data points. - ask and answer questions about how many in a category. - ask and answer questions about how many more or less are in one category than in another.

New vocabulary terms include: tally chart, survey, bar graph, picture graph

Later this week students will be working in partnerships to develop their own survey question, survey their classmates, collect data, and use the data to create either a picture graph or a bar graph!

From Ms. O.

Dear Parents,

WOW! I can’t believe that my last week is here, my time here flew by way too fast. To say that I will miss the students, is a HUGE understatement! I have cherished my time here with you all and your children, and will miss them so much. I got to witness each and every one of the students grow in different areas of their academic careers. I have thoroughly enjoyed spending each day with them, and learning alongside them. They have taught me more than they will ever know! I will miss seeing their smiling faces walk into the classroom each day, and their unique personalities shine. I will admit to you all that I was very nervous receiving my assignment for first grade last May. The first week was definitely a change, considering the last grade I was in was with fifth graders! I will tell you this, now that the semester is over, I cannot see myself teaching anything besides first grade! I fell head over heels in love with your kiddos and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing them with me. Each of them are so special and are going to do great things. I am so happy to have been in their classroom and to be placed with Heather. Not only were the kids great, but dang, aren’t we spoiled to have such a great classroom teacher? Heather has been so helpful and such a wonderful mentor during my time here. I cannot tell you enough how thankful I am to have been placed here, and to have met all of you and your wonderful children. I will definitely be stopping by and catching up with the kids next semester, I will miss them so much! Thank you all for being so wonderful to me and sharing your kiddos with me! They will be missed!

New Non-Fiction Reading Unit

This week students have begun our new non-fiction reading unit. We are excited about this, as it is part of our new curriculum and the unit is more robust and thorough than we've had in the past. This unit builds on a child’s natural curiosity to learn about the world.   It supports first-graders as they learn all they can learn from their books and share their learning with others.  This unit focuses on comprehension strategies, such as previewing the text, predicting, noticing text structure, and synthesizing information from multiple sources (the picture, the print, the text boxes).  With a continued emphasis on comprehension and basic reading processes, there is also a spotlight on vocabulary.  First-graders will develop good habits for decoding unfamiliar words and for working to understand new vocabulary.  This unit also supports building fluency and studying craft, teaching students how to revisit texts to reread in smoother voices, to sound like experts, and to notice craft moves authors make that they also can make and discuss.

Non-Fiction Writing Unit

We started a new writing unit this week. This unit prepares children to write informational texts of all sorts across the school year.  Students will build from Kindergarten, where students wrote teaching books such as, “All about Soccer.”  This unit will show kids how to write towards a more focused topic, such as “Scoring Goals.”  The reading and writing connection is strong in this unit.  Students will read informational books and apply craft moves.  Writing informational books also strengthens nonfiction reading skills, helping kids understand the purpose of headings and other nonfiction features. The connections will be easily made because our new reading which we begin this week also focuses on non-fiction text. The unit begins with instruction in how to make a basic type of information book, a picture book, and ends with children creating multiple information chapter books, filled with elaboration, interesting text elements, and pictures that supplement the teaching of the words.

Grade Level Project

Dear First Grade Families

We recently finished a unit in Social Studies all about Culture. We had some wonderful discussions around our various cultures and what makes us who are are! One topic we talked about that allowed us to get to know each other even better was different types of foods we all like to eat. We are so lucky in that so many different backgrounds are represented in our grade! We thought it would be neat if everyone could share a special family recipe so these could be compiled into a book. What a fun way to celebrate our differences! If you are interested in contributing, please submit a favorite family recipe to your child's teacher by Tuesday, November 21. It can be attached to this form or e-mailed. Please be sure to include your child's name on the recipe and if applicable, the country the recipe comes from originally. A book will be given to each student. Thank you so much for your help with this fun project!

Sincerely,
First Grade Teachers

Updates From Ms. O. :0)

Hello Everyone,

What a week it has been! I hope everyone enjoyed the festivities this week, it was great seeing all the kids dressed up on Tuesday! I have officially taken over all of the subjects! I apologize for not sending an update sooner, but Mrs. Koenig has sure kept me busy! :) Below is some more information on what we have been learning this week, and will dive into next week! Have an wonderful weekend!

Writing: We are finishing up learning how to become better writers by adding details, adjectives, and verbs to our writing! We practiced adding adjectives to our writing when creating our silly pumpkin patch earlier this week! Hopefully you all had the chance to pop your head in and see the pumpkin patch, it looks great! Next week we are jumping into publishing a story! The students will chose one story of their liking, and practice revising and editing to publish a wonderful story!

Math: This week we finished up topic three, which taught us all about addition facts! We have learned fun games, and activities to go along with practicing our math facts. Keep practicing those math facts at home too! Next week we are starting topic four and changing gears a bit. We are transitioning from addition over to subtraction, so we will be learning all the different strategies to solve subtraction problems. We have some fun stuff planned!

PMI / Word Work: This week our two word chunks were SH and ASH. We spent the week practicing the chunks, and brainstorming different words with the chunks. The accountable words for the week were get and tell. This next week our two chunk are ET and ELL, and went and best for accountable words.

Social Studies: We finished our unit on cultures and traditions and have transitioned back to our families now and then unit. We wanted to start our unit including Thanksgiving until November started so what we are exploring is fresh and new! We have read different books explaining what Thanksgiving is (Check out the book Thanksgiving is, the students loved it) and the importance of Thanksgiving in our history. Today we took a virtual field trip on the Mayflower. The students LOVED this even more! We put on our Pilgrim hats, packed our bags, and boarded our virtual ship and learned about the journey that was taken years ago.

Reading: We have some word detectives on our hands! We have continued our word detective unit and learned more strategies that will help us decode and figure out unknown words. This week we have learned about blends and digraphs, which will help us read words that we may not know. Next week we will continue our word detective unit, and hopefully receive a new mission from the agency! Fingers crossed!

Word Detectives

(que the spy music!)

Have you heard about our secret missions? We are having loads of fun with our new reading unit - Word Detectives! This unit supports students as they monitor their own reading by locating difficult words, using what they know to try solving those words, and then checking their attempts before either trying again or moving on.  This unit also supports students as they are learning how to increase their bank of high-frequency words-and also use the words they know to help solve unknown words.  As students learn ways to use visual information effectively, they will learn how to apply their phonics knowledge to solve words in continuous text, attending to blends and digraphs, common inflectional endings, syllable breaks, vowel combinations, common spelling patterns, contractions and compound words.  During this unit, first-graders will continually work on developing their fluency skills.

Each day this week we have received a super secret mission to complete......... and so far this is what we have worked on:

1. Word detectives notice when there is a problem and stop to solve it!
2. Word detectives look closely all through the whole word (we used small magnifying glasses during this lesson)
3. Word detectives use everything they know (we referenced our strategies for solving tricky words from the previous unit)

We have also learned a fun, new song to the tune of "Ghostbusters"

Lyrics:

Word Busters!

When there's something strange...
as you read your book...
Whatcha gonna do?
LOOK closely!

When the word is tough...
read from start to end.
Whatcha gonna do?
LOOK closely!

I ain't afraid of no word!

Essential Questions

Writing:

How do people compose a good story?
How do people develop a story?

Math:

How does knowing many strategies help me to be a better problem solver?
How can the relationship between addition and subtraction help me to solve problems?
How can I communicate my math thinking?

Reading:

How do I solve hard words?

Social Studies:

What are ways to solve conflict in our community?
What are ways to recognize different cultures in our community?

Social Studies

Our upcoming Social Studies unit which is due to start next week is called Families Now and Long Ago. During this unit, students will study the common needs of people and families and will make connections between family life now and in the past.  They will discover that families are continually evolving but also connected to the past. Through the research of first families, pilgrims and Native Americans, students will compare and contrast family life then and now. Children will read and listen to a variety of historical fiction and nonfiction related to periods in Missouri and American history.  There may be some homework associated with this unit as students will be encouraged to share information about their heritage!

Reading Update

Students have worked hard during our first reading unit to establish routines for how reading workshop operates as well as begin to collect a variety of strategies as they work towards more independence in word-solving.

We have learned good readers:
- take a sneak peak at the beginning
- do something at the end
- read more and more
- set goals
- re-read to smooth out your voice
- scoop up words in phrases
- re-read to see more

Good habits for good readers:
- check the picture
- look at all the parts of the word
- get a running start
- check it - do a double check
- try it 2 ways

Reading partners work together:
- we work as a team
- we read together
- we give reminders
- we grow ideas together
- we give book introductions
- we don't just tell - we help
- we do something at the end

Reviewing Short Vowels

This week we are doing some review of the short vowels. We have now spent a week on each one. Beginning next week, we will begin our grade level spelling patterns and accountable word work. Earlier this year a list of these was sent home, but I will be sending another at conferences so you can keep up with our work!

A short pre and post assessment will be completed each week for the spelling patterns. The words are different on the pre and post assessments. We are hoping for mastery of the chunks and therefore transfer by week's end into any word with that chunk. Pre and post assessments from the previous week will come home on Mondays. Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

Math Update

All students have gotten a chance to log into their Dreambox accounts! The link can be found on our grade level Symbaloo (first icon on the second row) : https://www.symbaloo.com/mix/firstgradelinks32  If you wish for your child to access at home, they may. There is no requirement for this. The most important thing to remember is NOT to help them! I know it's our first inclination to help but the software is adaptive and needs to understand where the children are struggling so they can modify the lessons.

We continue to work on a variety of skills in math. We are getting more into story problems. We are working hard on carefully reading a story problem and identifying what the question is asking and identifying what information we already know. Third step is to determine if we are adding or subtracting. For instance:

Mel had 8 balloons. George gave him 7 more. How many balloons does Mel have in all?

1. It's asking us to find how many balloons Mel has now
2. We know that he had 8. We know George gave him 7.
3. The words "more" and " in all" can help us know we are adding

We are encouraging students to use strategies that work for them.We are building on what they know and introducing new strategies as they apply.

Another new concept we are working on is identifying "how many more" or "how many fewer". This is a tricky one and we will continue to practice throughout the year.

Writing

This week we are finishing up our Small Moments unit and the students will be selecting a piece to publish. Towards the end of the week, watch for other books coming home they are finished working on. Sometime next week, we will find another class to share our published books with!

Starting next week, we will be working on our Telling Good Stories unit. Students will continue their development of storytelling skills within this unit of study, allowing students the option to write true, somewhat true, or realistic fictional small moment personal narratives. In Kindergarten, students learn to sequence stories across the pages of a book, adding feelings and engaging readers with their beginning and end.  We will expand this work in First grade by developing transitions with temporal words to signal event order.  Students will also learn how strong verbs and adjectives are used to develop plot and character.

Essential Questions for this unit are:

How do people compose a good story?
How do people develop a story?

September Journals

Your child's morning work journal will be coming home this afternoon. I encourage you to save these throughout the year to see their amazing growth! We do not use this every morning, so there are some empty pages. Feel free to use at home also!

Our meteorologists have been hard at work in science! Last week we learned how to record the daily weather. We observe 1. Cloud cover 2. Temperature 3. Precipitation. Students are recording the weather in their science notebooks. Students also learned to read a thermometer. They created their own model thermometer. Students made flags and we talked about measuring wind speed. We graphed the wind speed for a few days. This week students will learn about some other weather tools meteorologists use. Students will continue practicing using thermometers to measure the temperature of air and water. We will also begin learning about the water cycle!

At home, engage your child in looking at the daily weather! We are learning why it is important to know about the weather and how we use it to plan ahead. There are a lot of interesting weather happenings going on around the world right now, too. Hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

We have a very exciting guest coming in next Wednesday, October 3! A real life meteorologist from KMOV - Chief Meteorologist Steve Templeton will be coming to speak to the students! We have never had the pleasure of inviting a meteorologist in, so this is a very exciting opportunity for students to further their weather learning! Be sure to ask students what they learned!

Math Vocabulary

Your child should be bringing home math vocabulary cards for our next topic in math. Keep them handy ;)

Book Bags - Home Today!

Reading bags will begin coming home with your child today.  The books they choose to bring home each evening are at their independent reading level, which means they should be able to mostly read them on their own.  Please encourage them to read them to you every night.  They will then return the book the following day and check out a new one.  They will not be able to check out a new book unless the one from the previous day is returned.  As they get into the higher reading levels the books will become longer and they may have to spend more than one day with a book. Also...please note that I have not completely finished testing children on current reading levels.  Therefore, your child's books they are bringing home may not be their exact independent level at this time.  However, I thought it was more important to begin getting books into their hands to be reading at home!  I would ask that you do 3 things to support your child's reading at home.
1. Ask them to read their book to you that they bring home nightly.
2. Ask them a few comprehension questions after they finish reading.  (Some examples: Who were the main characters?, What was the problem in the story?, etc...)
3. Praise them for their successes and effort!

Whole Body Listening

We have been working on whole body listening on the carpet during lessons. We are working very hard on this. Today our guidance counselor did a lesson on the topic and students created a book about it! Ask your child about what it means to have whole body listening. :0)

Math Learning

Here are some math skills we are working on:

- Use addition and subtraction to solve word problems(CCSS, page 88, table 1).
- Solve one-step word problems with the unknown in any position.
- Solve word problems that call for adding three whole numbers.
- Represent a problem in multiple ways including objects, drawings and equations.
- Add and subtract within 20.
- Add and subtract within 10 fluently.
- Use a symbol (e.g., ? or ⃞) to represent an unknown in an equation.

Classroom Help

We are in need of a parent to come in and help with our classroom library books. The time for volunteers is 1:50-2:45. Any day except Wednesday will work. If you want to help, let me know!

It's a Dream Come True!

Did you hear the news? PTO has graciously provided Dreambox access for us! Before long, I will be sharing more information with you about the program and how it will work for your first grader. If you are curious about learning more, here is some helpful information for parents: http://www.dreambox.com/at-home Explore the subheadings for lots of great info about how it works! Very excited about this development!

Homework

Students are doing an excellent job completing homework and turning it in on time! Please make sure that the reading log on the front page is being filled out and signed each week. Nightly reading is super important! Beginning Wednesday, children will begin bringing home a book bag each evening with a book from their book box. These books will be at each child's independent level for practicing fluency and expression. Thanks a ton for making this a priority!

Constitution Day!

Today is Constitution Day! We will be talking about this important day and creating a minibook to bring home.

Message from Ms. O

Hello!

Things are moving right along at school, I can’t believe it is already the middle of September! I don't think I can express enough how wonderful it is being in class with your students. They are truly making my experience one I will always remember and cherish. We have been practicing all types of greetings in morning meeting from games, questions, chants, you name it! The students work so well with one another and are always excited to participate in everything we do. We just finished up learning about short vowel E last week and short vowel I this week in Word Work. The students have brought home a vowel game that would be great (and fun) practice for all of them. I'll make sure to send another one home for the weekend too! Next week we move on to short vowel O and will be doing all sorts of activities. Mrs. Koenig is handing over another subject to me starting next week, dun dun dun….
Just kidding. I will start teaching writing on Monday! I'm very excited to start writing with your children and reading all the stories they have and will write over the semester. It is going to be great. Thank you all again for allowing me the opportunity to work with such a great group of kids! Have a great weekend!

Math Update

This week we have introduced subtraction and also done some work with part-part-whole mats. The part-part-whole model is a visual that helps students see the relationship between addition and subtraction as it relates to composing and decomposing numbers. As we move into finding a missing addend, this model can be helpful in problem-solving. Here is what it looks like:

We do a lot more work with subtraction in first grade than was done in kindergarten. It has been a little tricky for some of the kiddos. If you notice your child struggling with the concept, encourage them to draw it out. When students are learning the concept it is really helpful for them to "see" the number as represented by circles and then physically cross them out to find the difference.

Writing Checklist

This week students have learned to think about using the components of a personal narrative as they create their 'small moment' stories. They are using a visual of a checklist to make sure their stories are the best they can be. Here are the items on the checklist:

I wrote about something I did ___

I tried to make a beginning for my story ___

I put my pages in order ___

I found a way to end my story ___

I wrote my story on three or more pages ___

As you read with your child at home, have conversations about how authors structure and develop their stories. We learn how to be good writers by reading real books and noticing what authors do!

Science

This week we are beginning our first science unit - weather. To kick off our science time and to introduce the idea of science, I posed a question to the students. I asked them "what is science?" They had a lot of great ideas. We brainstormed a web of what "science" means to them. We talked about how scientists use tools, they read/write/draw about their discoveries, they ask questions, they share information, they collaborate to complete experiments, and they are continually learning about their world. After our discussion, the students drew in their science notebooks what they think a scientist looks like. There were many different depictions. The students enjoyed sharing their ideas about science and scientists.

The essential questions for our science unit are:

- Why is it important for people to know about weather?
- How do temperature, wind, cloud cover and precipitation help us to understand the weather?
- How do we get information about the weather?

International Passport Night

Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 19th to travel 'around the world' at Shenandoah Valley! Last year was our first International Passport Night and it was so much fun! I anticipate even more fun opportunities this year! Students will have the chance to take their passport and travel to different areas of the school buildings where different countries will be represented. If you and your family are interested in hosting an area, I know that will be greatly appreciated as well! Students will get to learn about different countries, languages, art, food, games, and more about each country. More information coming home this evening :0)

Fish Items....

This may be a long shot, but it's worth asking! I inherited a fish tank I would love to get set up in our classroom. I am in need of a filter (for a 6 gallon tank) and an aquarium light. Does anyone have either item lying around they could donate to us? :)

Online Resources

The first grade team is working on getting all the online resources in one convenient spot for home and school use. We have MATH resources collected and ready to share. Many parents like to know how they can offer additional support at home. These games are fun, engaging, and go along with many first grade concepts. We will be adding ELA, Science, and Social Studies websites throughout the year. Please note that these are not required, simply an option if you feel it is appropriate for your family.

Follow the link to our symbaloo page. All the BLUE tiles represent Math websites. :) Please let me know if you have any questions!

Book Order Due FRIDAY

Class Code - J6ZT4
Order Due Date -  09/08/17

Dear Families,

I want your child to be a successful reader—and for that, I need your help.

When children choose their own books to read for pleasure, they enjoy reading more and spend more time doing it. The more your child reads, the better they will do in school and in life.

Scholastic Book Clubs flyers are made for you and your child to shop for books your child will love to read. Each month, the flyers are filled with trusted, excellent quality, age-appropriate books chosen by Scholastic for prices as low as one dollar.

Plus you will be helping our class when you order: Scholastic matches each order you place with FREE BOOKS for our classroom to share.

Thank you for helping your child become a successful reader.

Sincerely,
HEATHER KOENIG

Social Studies - What is a Citizen?

Students will begin first grade social studies with the study of citizenship, rules, rights and responsibilities.  The classroom and school contexts will be used to help students understand how these things help to create a system of order and justice and that they contribute to the overall common good of the school. Students will learn about school and classroom rules, why schools/classrooms have rules, and how they are enforced.

We have been working on our classroom community and vocabulary terms related to citizenship for the past couple of weeks! We have had many class discussions and read books related to the topic. Students have learned what makes an effective community here at school and beyond!

Reading - Building Good Habits

This unit is designed to remind first graders of the skills they have learned and emphasize that readers have good habits.  The good reading habits that students will practice are organized in three categories-habits for reading long and strong, habits for solving hard words, and habits for working with a partner.  The emphasis on habits provides a framework for establishing norms, rituals, values and identities that can make a world of difference.  Our job is to create in the classroom a richly literate world that invites children to role-play their way into being the types of readers and writers we want them to become, inspiring readers to to believe that this will be their year for reading.

Writing - Small Moments - Personal Narrative

We are working on writing personal narratives. This unit is designed to encourage children to write about small moments.  Students will write with detail, including showing a character’s small actions, dialogue, and internal thinking.  Students will move with independence through the writing process, choosing an idea, planning their writing by sketching stories across the pages of a booklet, storytelling repeatedly until the story feels just right, and revising to bring more detail and life to their stories.  Ideally, students will write three to four booklets per week, each with the goal of several sentences per page.

Word Work / Handwriting

Our word work this week will be the short e sound. You will see some material coming home the children have completed in class.

We have also started some direct instruction on handwriting. We are using primary lined paper to practice proper letter formation. When we complete the book it will come home. :)

Morning Work

Every morning when your child arrives at school, there is a job ready for them to begin working on. We try to include math, literacy, and word work. Each month I have a monthly journal students will write in a couple mornings for morning work. This is a great way for me to see what's going on in your child's world and also focus on specific skill needs. Look for these to come home at the end of the month to see specifically what your child is working on. :)

Homework

This week we are beginning first grade homework packets. Thank you for making sure your child completes their homework each week and returns it on Friday!

Conference Sign Up

Follow this link to sign up for a fall conference! Conferences are the week of October 2. I am offering some times other than the evening of the 5th. Hopefully everyone can find a time that works for them!

Class Reward Earned

We have been working since the first day of school to earn 5 golden paws. We earn a golden paw when everyone in class is showing Panther PRIDE. We met our goal! The students voted and would like to have a stuffed animal day. Friday, September 8th students can bring a (reasonably sized) stuffed animal friend to school. These need to be small enough to fit on a desk. Please let me know if you have any questions!

GP on Math pages

As you see math work book pages come home, if you see a "GP" at the top this means "guided practice" and we did it together. :0)

Family Photos and Family Flags

Two things I need your help with:

Please send in a family photo for our family picture wall. :0)

Friday I sent home a half sheet asking for any flags that represent your family's heritage. Please send these in. We will be displaying flags which represent all our learners!

7 Habits

This week we will begin our Leader in Me lessons! We are beginning with Habit #1 - Be Proactive. We will be reading books and doing activities to help children understand what habit 1 is all about! Our fourth grade buddies are also going to be helping us learn about habit 1. Teaching us is a great leadership opportunity for them :)

Here are some books that relate to the topic which we may be reading this week. Also, keep these in mind for your library trips! There are some great resources out there with book ideas, I will always share!

A Note from Ms. Oglesby

Hello Everyone!

Wow! I can't believe it is the third week of school! It has been wonderful getting to know your children and I am ecstatic to be assigned to such a great group. I wanted to reach out to you all and give an update on what is happening in class with the student teacher! Mrs. Koenig and I began splitting subjects this week, and I am starting with morning meeting and word study. We have been getting to know one another more in depth in our morning meetings. We talk about our favorite things, what we want to be when we grow up, and more! We will continue to build our community during this time and really practice our Panther Pride. In word study, we dove head first into vowels and will be continuing learning about all the vowels for the next few weeks. I plan on sending updates throughout the semester to keep you all updated with our class! Thank you all for allowing me to get to know your wonderful kids!

Sincerely,
Ms. Oglesby

Math - Unit 1 - Addition and Subtraction

Our first math unit this year will be on addition and subtraction. This is the first of two units on addition and subtraction. The first focuses on basics that we will use to build on and later in the school year our second unit on addition and subtraction will deal with larger numbers.

Our first unit will guide students in how to solve addition and subtraction problems that model real-life situations. Each type of situation demonstrates how real-life problems can be modeled with math.

Students are working towards fluency with addition and subtraction within 10. Having automaticity  with facts will make students more efficient problem-solvers. We will also study various strategies to solve math problems. Strategies include counting on and counting back, using doubles and near doubles, adding with 5, adding ten, adding in any order, and thinking addition to subtract. Key strategies are taught and practiced for solving addition and subtraction facts to 20.

Workbooks: Last year we adopted a new math resource. It includes a lengthy 2-volume workbook set. You will see pages coming home from time to time. We do not complete all the pages for each lesson. From time to time I may send a page home for additional practice of a skill. When we finish volume 1, it will be sent home and you may either use it for additional practice or toss it. ;)

Word Work - Vowels

We always start the first few weeks of school by introducing the vowels and doing practice with the short vowel sounds. Each week we will focus on a letter. This week has been short A. Next week will be E, and so on. Knowing the vowel sounds is key in reading and writing and the short sounds provide important foundational components for our literacy work this year!

We practice the vowel sounds through writing, reading, songs, partner work, and independent practice. Ms. Oglesby has begun teaching our word work lessons and will continue to create daily lessons for our vowel work.

After we get through the vowels we will begin working on grade-level spelling patterns and the accountable words!

Essential Questions

We have a set of essential questions which go along with all of our curriculum units of study. These questions get the students thinking about the concepts and are great discussion starters both at school and home. I will share the essential questions for each unit with you. I encourage you to ask your students these questions at home. They're great conversation starters! Many times if you ask a first grader what they learned at school, they will say "nothing" or "I can't remember". These questions will spark their memory of their learning from school! Here is the first set of EQ's:

Writing:

-What habits help me build stamina?

-How do I write tricky words?

-How do I stretch out a personal narrative?

Math:

- How does knowing many strategies help me to be a better problem solver?

- How can the relationship between addition and subtraction help me to solve problems?

- How can I communicate my math thinking?

- How does knowing many strategies help me to be a better problem solver?

- How can the relationship between addition and subtraction help me to solve problems?

- How can I communicate my math thinking?

Reading:

- What habits help me as a reader?

- What do I do when words are tricky?

- How do reading partners work together?

- What makes an effective community?

Social Studies:

- How can I help make my community a better place to be?

- How do my school and community influence each other?

- What are my rights and responsibilities in my community?

Library Check Out

Library check-out will be on D days for our class. All books will be returned EVERY Tuesday. :)

Writing Ideas Homework

A few students have asked about homework. We will have weekly homework beginning after Curriculum Night.

This week I am sending home a writing ideas list. Could you please help your child brainstorm some ideas for writing topics? Trips you've taken, activities your child likes to do? Please return by Monday 8-28.

THANKS!

Highlights Magazine

There is a Highlights Magazine form coming home this evening for those interested. I think it's a pretty great publication for children. My son and niece have a subscription and it's a nice alternative to books sometimes (and easier to take in the car!) Whether you are interested or not in the subscription, if you sign and return it we can earn free stuff for our classroom. If it isn't too much trouble and you could sign and return, that would be great! :)

It was a Totality Awesome Day!

Excuse the terrible pun.... but what a day! The students did such a fabulous job following ALL directions today! I'm sure they won't fully appreciate the experience for several years, but it was awesome making memories with them.

Word Study

Throughout the year we will work on a set of first grade accountable words. We will also be working with many grade-level spelling patterns, blends, and digraphs. Here are the essential questions for our word study curriculum which we will be working on throughout the year. Much of this work will be embedded in our reading and writing work.

1. How does using words help readers and writers communicate?
2. How do readers and writers use strategies to solve unknown words?
3. How does learning about ‘how words work’ help readers and writers?
4. How does a writer’s spelling impact communication?

Here are K and First Grade accountable words:

K - and at* can* dad* go I in* is it* like me mom my see the to we First and last name

1st -  all* am are as back* be best* big by came* can’t day* did do for get* got* had has he her him his if look* love make* no of on one or play saw she stop* tell* that the they thing* this up was went* when will* with yes you

Panther Paws/Leader in Me

This is an exciting year as we are implementing the Leader in Me program more and more. We are going to continue using our panther paws as well. For those of you new to our building, or those who need a little refresher:

P- Practice Safety
R- React Responsibly
I - Initiate Kindness
D - Demonstrate Respect
E - Embrace Cooperation

The Leader in Me habits are:

1- Be Proactive
2. Begin With the End in Mind
3. Put First Things First
4. Think Win-Win
5. Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw

Here is how the habits relate to our Panther PRIDE:

Practice Safety/ Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind
React Responsibly/ Put First Things First, Begin with the End in Mind
Initiate Kindness/Seek First to Understand, Sharpen the Saw
Demonstrate Respect/Seek First to Understand
Embrace Cooperation/ Think Win-Win, Synergize

If your child gets "caught" showing any of these character traits they will receive a panther paw! We are also working as a class to earn golden paws. We can earn a golden paw when the entire class demonstrates one or more characteristic.

Take Home Folders

On the first day of school, each child received a take home folder. Please help this come to and from school each day. Most handouts will be distributed on Fridays. Once and awhile there may be time sensitive items throughout the week. I will try to post on Fridays about what is coming home so you know what to look for.

Today look for:
-Student handbook: Please find some time to read through this so you know about procedures :0)
-K-12 accident insurance
-Technology contract: Please discuss this with your child, sign and return the form. I need these before your child may use our classroom chrome books.
